Equis is a set of organizations (including Equis Research, Equis Institute, and EquisLabs) working to create a better understanding of Latinos, innovate new approaches to reach and engage them, and invest in the leadership and infrastructure for long-term change and increased engagement.

Since 2019, we have served as a hub for Latino research and innovation, leaning into the complexities of Latino voters in the United States, ensuring they get the sophistication of treatment and level of attention that matches their critical role in the electorate. Equis is also committed to developing Latino leaders across the progressive space, serving as a convener of organizations and individuals leading Hispanic-focused programs. The scope of our work is designed to engage Latinos in multiple arenas because we believe that this moment requires a complete rethinking of how we engage Latinos.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the President, the Controller works across multiple entities as part of the Equis portfolio of organizations and oversees all financial activities, including accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate financial record-keeping, regulatory compliance, and timely reporting, playing a critical role in the company’s financial integrity and overall financial strategy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis
    • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to ensure accuracy and completeness.
    • Develop and maintain financial reporting models, providing insights and recommendations based on data.
    • Oversee the preparation of financial statements in compliance with GAAP and/or IFRS.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting
    • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with department heads to set achievable financial targets.
    • Monitor and analyze budget performance, identifying variances and proposing adjustments.
    • Update and maintain rolling forecasts to support decision-making.
  • Audit & Compliance
    • Coordinate annual audits, including preparation of audit schedules, responding to auditor inquiries, and ensuring timely completion.
    • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as internal policies.
    • Maintain internal control processes to protect company assets and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Cash Management & Treasury
    • Manage cash flow and ensure the company has sufficient liquidity to meet obligations.
    • Oversee bank reconciliations, accounts receivable, and accounts payable processes.
    • Evaluate and manage financial risk, including currency, credit, and liquidity risk.
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Supervise, train, and mentor finance and accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
    • Lead initiatives to improve processes, efficiency, and accuracy within the finance team.
    • Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and provide feedback to team members.
  • Systems Management & Process Improvement
    • Oversee ERP and other financial software, ensuring systems are optimized and fully utilized.
    • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting operations and enhance accuracy.
    • Lead financial system implementations or upgrades, ensuring a smooth transition and integration with existing systems.
  • Strategic Financial Support
    • Support executive management by providing insights and recommendations based on financial analysis.
    • Collaborate with the CFO in formulating the company’s financial strategy and assessing financial performance.
    • Provide ad-hoc reporting and financial analysis as needed for business decisions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 8-10 years of accounting/finance experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP/IFRS and financial reporting.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to inspire and motivate the team; promotes teamwork and accountability.
  • Strong attention to details and accuracy in financial reporting and compliance.
  • Ability to anticipate challenges and initiate solutions before issues arise.
  • Demonstrates integrity, ensuring transparency and fairness in all financial practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • CPA or equivalent is preferred
  • Experience in non for profit entities within the field of progressive organizations, or a closely related industry

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • The ability to communicate with colleagues, partners, and clients via phone, video call, and email

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Equis is a national remote office environment with team members located across all continental U.S. time zones. Candidates should be prepared to either work from home or a location of their choosing that is located within the continental United States.

This position requires the ability to work core hours Monday through Friday in your local time. This position will require occasional nights and weekend work and some in-person attendance for all-staff or department level events, approximately 2 per year, which require overnight travel.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a fully remote (USA only), full-time position, EXEMPT (with occasional domestic travel) and a competitive salary range of $118,000 - $178,000/year. This salary range represents a good faith estimate of what Equis may pay for this position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as budget availability and commensurate with the selected candidates’ experience.
